Profile

Preeti Kaur was born at Shanta Bhawan Hospital, Kathmandu on April 20 to Jorawar Singh and Ranjit Kaur. She shares that she had a lovely childhood. She studied at Ganodaya Bal Batika till class eight and later joined New Florence International School from where she completed her School Leaving Certificate (SLC). She then joined People's Campus from where she completed her studies till Intermediate Level in Commerce. "After finishing my studies till Intermediate, I didn't continue with my academics. I opted for music rather than certificates." states Preeti. Going back to her yesteryears, she informs that she was a very jolly kid. "I was an introvert and I never got involved in mischief!" claims Preeti adding that during those days she used to get along pretty well with both the boys and girls. However, later she started hanging around with boys more often. "That was since class eight!" says Preeti.

ENTRY IN THE MUSIC SCENE

She had always been interested in music but never gave it a serious thought. In 2003, she participated at the 'Shikhar Music Beat Competition' along with her band 'Nibha' in which she was able to bag the 'Best Vocalist' award and the band, the title of 'Best Band Of The Year'. This was a turning point in her life. She then decided to take up music seriously. Before her involvement with 'Nibha', she was already singing with other bands. During that period, she specialized only in singing English covers. After 'Shikhar Music Beat Competition' she decided to go solo and thus, made her entry into mainstream music. "The main reason why I was sticking with the band was because I wanted to get the feel of stage performances and the platform to really understand music in total. Going solo was always at the back of my mind and I had decided long time back what I wanted in life. Therefore, I opted to leave the band." Before hitting the music scene, she had simultaneously completed her senior diploma in classical music from Prayog Sangeet Samiti.

In 2004, she released her debut album 'Preeti' which did a decent job in bringing her talents to the forefront. At the '7th Image Music Awards' her song "Dheri Patak Jiwan Ma" got her the 'Best Female Pop Vocalist Award'. She was honored with the same title by Kalika FM, Chitwan.

Besides singing Nepali numbers, she has also tried her hand at Newari, French, Tibetan, English and Hindi tracks. In regard to performances, she has traveled to most places in Nepal, Qatar and Hong Kong. Looking back at her initial days, she informs that it was not an easy journey. "There were many people who gave me false hopes and promises in regards to releasing my album. There were music composers who initially told me that they are not going to charge any money for 'helping' me and once they were done with their work they asked for it. Some demanded Rs 3000 and some Rs 4000 for each composition. Coming out with 'Preeti' was not that easy!" As for now, she is busy working on her second solo album. She has already started recording but so far is not sure about the name of the album. "This time, my album will feature alternative rock numbers as well!" says Preeti.

Since 2003, she has been involved with the band 'Cloud Walkers' and has been performing at Rox Bar, Hyatt Regency on Fridays and Saturdays.

ME/MYSELF

I am a very moody person. I am also unusually stubborn but a very sensitive one. I like traveling to new places. The one thing that I cannot do without in my life is music.

LOVE AND MARRIAGE

I believe that love is all in the mind. For some it is just fun whereas for the others, it is just a trend or a fashion. I prefer love marriage to arranged. "I won't deny that I have never fallen in love. I have...in fact I was pretty serious about our relationship but it didn't have a happy ending. We broke up because of some misunderstandings and moreover, our opinions just didn't match." Marriage is a medium to take your generation into the next level. "Marriage is something which is legal that allows and accepts a male and a female to live together and have their own family. I do not have any idea regarding when I am going to marry and whom I am going to marry and how I am going to get married. Only God knows about it!" states Preeti.
